I was at the PAT Korean market last weekend and saw these all prepped and ready to go. With some rice and seaweed these can be made into rolls in minutes! Very good idea.

I saw this posted on BlogTO and I bet his traffic has increased significantly. Toronto Sushi is a blog dedicated to reviewing the sushi joints of Toronto – and boy do we have a lot of them. He has been to my favorite, Yuzu, and I hope he tries some of the more eclectic places like Hashimoto and Sushi Kaji.

Ginza Sushi is a new sushi place that opened up at Bay and Bloor, across the street from Pusateri’s. It replaced the old Eggstacy Bar and Grill.

Sushi here was reasonably priced, comparable to Ashi Sushi and Sushi Inn. My friend and I shared one of the sushi combo platters and I was impressed by the size of the sashimi, there was very nice larger cuts to eat. Everything was fresh and the service was good.

Ginza is part of a chain of sushi restaurants that started 13 years ago. However this new location caters to a different crowd by opening later and offering a selection of martini’s. I have yet to try their delivery service.

There seems to be an abundance of sushi places in Yorkville. Let’s hope Ginza manages to tough it out. With a location a little out-of-the-way compared to some of Yorkville’s sushi staples, it remains to be seen.

The Toronto Star were trying to find out what sushi restaurants were using Tilapia instead of Red Snapper but still calling it snapper.

The article reads a little confusing, so let me clarify. Both tilapia and red seabream are not considered red snapper. Ten restaurants brought out tilapia when red snapper was ordered from the menu. One brought red seabream instead. One other restaurant didn’t list red snapper on the menu but called red seabream as red seabream, the most honest menu.

While Sushi Marche had the most honest answer, I am willing to give Yuzu a break for their description change – they at least still used the words red seabream as the name of the fish. I had been there once in the past, and still will go to Yuzu.

10 restaurants served tilapia when red snapper was ordered from the menu

  • Ichiban Sushi House
  • Nara Sushi
  • Kimono Japanese Grill and Sushi
  • Katsu Sushi Japanese Restaurant
  • Japango Sushi and Noodle Restaurant
  • Sushi and Bento Japanese and Korean B.B.Q. Restaurant
  • Sushi Star Japanese Cuisine
  • Sushi on Bloor
  • Yama
  • Sushi 2 Go

1 menu described red seabream as “red snapper from japan”

  • Yuzu

1 menu correctly identified red seabream, did not call it snapper

  • Sushi Marche

Yuzu is a new sushi restaurant on Adelaide street. I went last week with friends and it was quite good. The make rolls were great with spicy sauces not overdone or too “mayonaissey”. Sauces are also put on the plate to avoid too much sauce on the maki.

We started with tempura and edemame, and moved on to dynamite and spider rolls, an assorted set of sashimi and a dragon roll. All were really good.

Here’s a set of reviews on Yuzu:

I’ve been to Blowfish before, but not before I started blogging. Located on the Northeast corner of King and Bathurst, it’s in an old bank building. Inside is an extremely modern interior that’s very white and nicely lighted.

The bar has a very wide selection of Sake – probably the largest collection I’ve seen since I’ve been to Nami many years ago. I ordered my high-maintenance-gin-martini and it was served perfectly. My friend ordered a “mountain man” chilled sake.

We ordered many dishes for dinner and shared between the five of us. The standouts that I recall was the soft-shell crab rolls and the miso-marinated black cod. I found the menu almost too large, with many many items to choose from, it was hard to select what we all wanted. Still, we managed and all were quite happy with the meal and drinks. Blowfish is recommended.
