A friend of mine is starting up a new business. His new startup will appeal to readers of my blog so he wanted to ask for suggestions on what to name it. It will be a wine marketing venture – what creative names can you come up for a business that appeals to you?

Autoblog did a test of all-season tires on an all-wheel drive car, the Subaru Legacy. They found that even with the all-wheel drive system, the all-seasons tires did not perform well in the snow at all. This result is made worse because many drivers with AWD feel safe to drive at speeds equal to dry conditions. One needs to note that all-wheel drive does nothing to help braking, and does little to help turning in low-grip conditions. This should be noticed by SUV drivers – who I find to the be worst offenders when it comes to not choosing winter tires.

I’m still a huge fan of most all-wheel drive systems, just pair them with good winter tires should the weather dictate their use.

I spotted this book at Indigo and received it for Christmas with some gentle hinting. It’s not a common book, barely available in the USA and only available through select stores due to it’s UK publishing house. It’s got loads of pictures, in full color, and has recipes which are pretty simple to make. The description below is from Amazon:

This book offers advice on how to make the world’s best zuppa inglese; how to coat meat with flour and not get your hands dirty; how to keep your friands light and stop your souffles sinking; how to chiffonade a handful of fresh basil in 10 seconds; how to make a perfect beer batter for fish, and perfect chips to go with it; how to buy a fresh crab and get rid of the ‘funny’ bits; how to whip egg whites. This book provides advice on how to cook…everything. This book include a timeless collection of essential recipes that will save you trawling through old books to find Apple Charlotte, Bearnaise Sauce or pizza dough. All recipes have been triple-tested in the Murdoch Books Test Kitchen for guaranteed results.

The Toronto area got a recent update in Google Maps yesterday. Judging by the state of construction projects near my place, I’m judging the new maps were taken this summer.

KN0027V_001I didn’t notice that Calphalon created a new line of knives called Katana. With a contemporary-styled handle and a damascus metal for the blades it looks really good.

The pictured knife is one of my favorite knife types, a flat small cleaver – perfect for vegetables and my go-to knife for almost everything. Calphalon calls it a Nakiri knife. Anthony Sedlak uses it on his tv show, The Main.

This is a straight link to an article on Digital Photography School. I can’t summarize the article good enough – you’ll have to read the full article – it’s worth it.

Many of the techniques involve “breaking the rules” which I like. Don’t be afraid to experiment – especially now that you shoot digital. Noone is limited to taking 24 shots and waiting for the lab to see the results. Take lots of photos!

Canon S90Much like the DSLR guide earlier, Gizmodo published an article stating the best point and shoot cameras. Given that I love Canon’s new S90 and the thin Sony, I tend to agree with their recommendations:

  • Best for lowlight: Canon S90
  • Best value: Samsung HZ15W
  • Best video: Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7
  • Best small size: Sony TX1
  • Best weatherproof: Pentax Optio W80
