I use Gmail as my primary email service. For over a year, Gmail has offered “themes” for the service which allow users to customize the look of Gmail to suit their preferences. Initially I thought it was cosmetic only and kept it on the default theme.
On a whim, I chose the Tree Theme recently and noticed that it did something unusual. The background changes according to the weather. When it is sunny outside, the background of the tree theme shows a clear sky. Consequently, when it is raining or even thunderstorms, the background will change to match the current conditions.
It does this because the theme selector allows you to select what city you are from. Based on that information it looks up your current weather conditions and displays the appropriate theme. It’s a very useful feature if you just want to know the current conditions. It’s not “in your face” nor overly technical. Try it out – themes are available by clicking settings at the top right corner. Go to the theme section and select “Tree”.
