Nikon unveiled two of it’s anticipated cameras today, the D300 and D3000.

The D3000 is aimed at first-time SLR users, it is similar to the D5000 but loses the foldout LCD, and gains a revamped menu system that will be a boon to beginners, but a bain to more serious photographers.

More interesting is the D300s, which adds 720p video capability to the D300 and an SD card slot. This camera is not going to be a large upgrade for existing D300 shooters, unless you’re dying to shoot video.

Nikon also refreshed two of their popular lenses, the 70-200mm F2.8 and the 18-200mm F3.5-5.6 VRII.

It’s not every day that there is a launch of a new Ferrari. The Italian company took the wraps off the replacement for the F430 this week by unveiling the Ferrari 458 Italia.

It should be arriving on our shores next year – if you can’t wait, the Ferrari California is available for sale.

I love T&T Supermarkets, the Chinese/Asian grocer that started appearing in the GTA just a few years ago. Their latest store on Cherry St. is a weekly stop for me. Filled with all sorts of asian specialty goods and fantastic prices I think it has been a huge success here as it has been in their home market in Vancouver.

This success was noticed and today Loblaws announced they are buying T&T for $225 million dollars. This gives me mixed feelings. As an investor of Loblaws, I think this can only be good for the company. Expanding into ethnic markets is a sure avenue for growth and buying a chain is definitely the best strategy rather than building their own brand.

However, one of the joys of T&T was that it wasn’t Loblaws. They were the first in the city to introduce those new rolley baskets, they have great fresh food and a sit-down area to eat the prepared foods. They have products offered from a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds – most recently I noticed their Korean food offerings being expanded.

Let’s hope Loblaws doesn’t tinker with the formula – and try to increase profitability by sacrificing the uniqueness of this market. If the aisles prominently display President’s Choice Soy Sauce front-and-center on the shelves, it will be time to shop somewhere else.

At Wired.com a hacker has blown open the “secure” technology found in the newest operating system used on iPhones. While having hacked a mobile device is not that surprising, it was surprising to note how easy it was. Easy enough that the author considers it as simple to get access to as a non-encrypted device.

While that may be true to a certain extent, a lot of effort has to be given to the existing hacking teams that have ‘jailbroke’ the iPhone – the hack involves the use of redsn0w or purple ra1n hacks to work. The problem is both hacks are so widely distributed, made user friendly, and very well documented on thousands of websites. There is literally an army of hackers attacking the iPhone to get rid of it’s Apple-enforced limitations that the side effect is that these toolkits can be used by malicious hackers to access information on devices.

It’s a hard place for Apple who wants to secure these devices so they have better acceptance in the enterprise market. However the popularity of the iPhone has made it probably the most hacked device ever.

These are both awe-inspiring cars, but what is truly awe-inspiring is how much of a gap the winner had. I won’t spoil it, but the math only works for one clear winner. Decisively.

I use Gmail as my primary email service. For over a year, Gmail has offered “themes” for the service which allow users to customize the look of Gmail to suit their preferences. Initially I thought it was cosmetic only and kept it on the default theme.

On a whim, I chose the Tree Theme recently and noticed that it did something unusual. The background changes according to the weather. When it is sunny outside, the background of the tree theme shows a clear sky. Consequently, when it is raining or even thunderstorms, the background will change to match the current conditions.

It does this because the theme selector allows you to select what city you are from. Based on that information it looks up your current weather conditions and displays the appropriate theme. It’s a very useful feature if you just want to know the current conditions. It’s not “in your face” nor overly technical. Try it out – themes are available by clicking settings at the top right corner. Go to the theme section and select “Tree”.

More coverage about the 1 Bloor development. Today, Bazi’s issued a news release that clarified their position on the legal battle that is taking place between them and their loan holders. What’s surprising is the news release leaked out the name of their hotel partner – Sofitel.

More information is found at the Toronto Star, including Bazi’s press release.

Given the recent financing, legal and public relations challenges currently affecting Bazi’s, I would not be surprised if some of their retailers and even Sofitel pull their support if a resolution is not found quickly.

The Toronto Star continues to have a great set of Google Map mashups produced each week. Over the past two weeks they’ve produced maps of the admissions into GTA universities by area – presumeably by postal code information provided by the university. Check out the maps below:

University of Toronto: St. George

University of Toronto: Scarborough

University of Toronto: Mississauga

York University: Keele

York Unversity: Glendon

The unit owners of 1 Bloor have been eagerly awaiting news of the development this week. This was the week that all the timers ran out – extentions, agreements, etc. all expired on Thursday. On Friday the display center was locked tight and this morning the Toronto Star said there is a huge legal fight brewing for the ownership of the land. The original developer cannot secure funding from a reliable source and the owner of the original loan is calling it in. Looks like the empty lot on the corner of Yonge and Bloor is going to stay empty for many years to come.

As always, all the gossip and hearsay are available at the Urban Toronto Forum.
